Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same type of storm.  They are all tropical storms that intensify over warm ocean water with sustained winds of at least 74 mph around the center of the storm.  They are called hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, the Central and Eastern Pacific Oceans.  West of the International Date Line, they are called typhoons.  They are called cyclones in the Indian Ocean and around Australia.  There are different lists of names, too, depending on the part of the world a tropical storm forms in.
