This has been a unique weather week in the DC Metro Area. It began with widespread heavy rain and 1” rainfall totals at both National and Dulles Airports on Monday, December 14. Tuesday’s weather was sunny, cold and dry; the proverbial “calm before the storm.”
Next, Wednesday was another very active weather day in the DC Metro Area. Light to moderate snow overspread the area Wednesday morning with light accumulations within the immediate DC Metro before the changeover to mix or rain. Areas west and north of downtown saw more snow and icing than inside the Capital Beltway. For example, the Nation’s Capital officially only saw a trace of snow at National Airport, while Dulles Airport had 2.3”.
Totals of 2’ to 3’ were reported from central Pennsylvania to central New York, where 42” were measured in Binghamton. However, this was clearly not a record setting snow event in the Nation’s Capital.
Although some downtown spots had an inch of snow
Wednesday, DC’s official weather measurements are made at National Airport
where an inch of snow last occurred on February 20, 2019.
